Linguistic and Literature Competitions
National Schools Literature Festival 2019 and Online Olympiad in Linguistics 2024
My participation in such competitions allowed me to understand the study of language and what it entails e.g. exposure to diverse linguistic expressions, analysis of language usage, etc.

National Schools Literature Festival
Our team won the title of "1st Place Winner" during the set text debate at the National Schools Literature Festival in 2019 which was participated by many schools all around Singapore. We were given a trophy for our placing, winner badges, and a certificate of participation. In preparation for this competition, we deep-dived into several literary theories, crafting debate speeches, and studying language texts. From my involvement, I cultivated a nuanced understanding of language variation, usage, and style, exploring cultural and societal contexts within Literature. I also explored interdisciplinary connections, gaining insights from disciplines such as history, psychology, and sociology.
Online Olympiad in Linguistics
This was the first Linguistics olympiad held in a while and was my first linguistics competition. I had participated in this to deepen and supplement my interest in languages and prepare myself for my chosen language-centric degree programmes which I intend to pursue. In particular, I wanted to learn and be more exposed to concepts like syntax and phonetics. The competition was held online and had participants from various regions and countries. Although I did not get a placing, this exposure most definitely strengthened my linguistic skills, problem-solving and analytical skills, and exposure to diverse language structures, variations, and pragmatics.
